A true friend advises, argues

we suffer from many problems in kuwait with no solutions in sight. take for example the issue of bedoun, administrative backwardness, lawsuits accumulated in courts, delay in judicial verdicts, rampant corruption, bribe in every facility and other calamities.
many people have various types of problems either because they fi nd no solution to them or solutions are diffi cult to come by. here we also cite the miserable situation of our international airport, which may soon fi nd a solution after the availability of the new supporting terminal, and moving the al-jazeera to its own building.
we hope unqualifi ed companies will not take over the management of the new terminal and the next.
one issue that is not diffi cult to fi nd a solution to is to fi nd a highly quali- fi ed chief executive offi cer to manage the kuwait airways corporation (kac) rather than choosing someone who is not effi cient enough. there is no doubt there are many qualifi ed kuwaitis who can do the job.
our experiences with those people who were imposed on the company by the government are unforgettably bitter.
the task of selection becomes more diffi cult in the absence of a future government outlook. the responsibility of mr yousef al jassim is big to solve the inherited accumulated problems of some of the company’s departments.
the main reason for the deterioration of the company’s status is due to the government confusion, lack of vision, constant change in the supervisory role and repeated change of the board of directors.
other reasons include not taking the decision — until now — about the future of the company either to make it a national carrier or sell it to the private sector. this decision will determine the course of the company and its future management.
many people who are concerned about the company know very well that the biggest problems facing the kuwait airways result from its huge administrative expenses, the weakness of its management, and shortage of local expertise and intervention of some infl uential people in the work of the company.
the government also worked hard to employ the relatives of some mps and their voters just to satisfy them. so the success of the company or preparing it for privatization hangs in balance.
this cannot be done without appointing a highly qualifi ed executive and a strong personality who can implement the board’s program and give shape to the government plan to make the company either a national carrier or privatize the airline.
the board of directors must be dedicated to planning and choosing the executive body, and monitor his performance, accountability and immunize if from the parliament and government interventions to help the company be on par with the world airlines and new developed fl eet and put it on the track of its past glory.
without exaggeration, the company has drained billions of dollars of public money. there is a silver lining on the horizon that the current board will be able to stop this dreadful bleeding and allow this 64-year-old bird to return to its former glory.
note: we thank the financial supervisory department for their response to our critical article to allow the fi nancial controllers to accept gifts of up to 100 dinars. it could have been just one line response that they accept gifts because others accept them, instead of a threepage document.
