Forces of darkness
your excellency sheikh nasser sabah al-ahmad, first deputy prime minister and minister of defense . . .
excuse me for addressing you, sir, by the name you love, abu abdullah. although our relationship has never been more than a handshake during social occasions, i feel close to you for what i have heard about your goodness, your integrity and your generosity ... this is not age.
your ambitions, abu abdullah are great. it also seems that your hopes in the development and progress of this country are boundless, to prepare kuwait for the post-oil phase, which is defi nitely coming and we must be prepared. this is one of the wise leadership priorities of any country.
to ‘overhaul’ the nation from geographical, social, human and structural point of view is not easy. the hope to attract huge foreign investments is not an easy goal either, but when such things stand in front of the big souls, nothing can stand in front of you to achieve what you hope or dream.
you have stated that you will not allow the ‘forces of darkness’ to hide among us in reference to what happened at the al- sadiq mosque in downtown kuwait city sometime back, but unfortunately there are still a number of them among us, and what happened after that, prompted me to write this article!
one or two days ago, a colleague in the ministry responded publicly to the request of one of the members of the so-called forces of darkness and cancelled a seminar during which an egyptian thinker was to give a lecture about ‘humanity’. the seminar was cancelled under the pretext the lecturer was not from their group.
two days earlier, the same forces of backwardness asked the same offi cial to punish a broadcaster because she described her colleague as ‘not pretty’.
this was preceded by the approval given by the ministry of social affairs for founding a religious society whose thought believes in violence. permission was granted to this society to open whatever institutes, schools, colleges and universities it likes. it is known that the goal is not to make material profit.
it may not be, sir, that these are the best examples of the seriousness of what is going on, but it is clear there are persistent problems and hostile acts are being carried out in an organized manner against the civil state, and this situation will worsen if we choose to remain silent.
all of this shows beyond doubt that the forces of darkness that you have warned of are creating cracks in the walls of our homes and institutions, and there are those who encourage, feed and strongly support them.
i have no doubt abu abdullah that your projects and dreams for a new kuwait will succeed, provided you have on your team free and open-minded people.
historically, the forces of darkness are known to swim against the tide of freedom, humanity, coexistence and openness.
and the future, sir, and even the entire life is worth nothing but freedom, and your projects and the forces of darkness cannot go hand in hand, so abu abdullah try to get rid of them before you continue your career, religious civilization and religious observance do not meet.
