queen elizabeth ii is a member of the windsor family. the original family name was saxe-coburg-gotha, originally from germany, descendant from one of the largest noble german families, the venetians, who ruled over part of saxony. when queen victoria married her relative prince albert sachs-coburg-gotha, she gave birth to nine boys. the boys and their children bore the saks-koperggotha title. edward vii, who became the fi rst ruler in 1901 after victoria, but following the outbreak of the world war i, britain’s royal family, which was at war with germany, had to abandon its german title, and named it windsor, which was the name of a palace where they live till date. britain was and is still obsessed with registering everything. the statistical book ‘domesday’ dates back to almost a thousand years ago. britain began recording temperatures 300 years ago and retains thousands of historic references of the world, particularly the history of our region, which we have failed to do. the british churches and most of the christian churches keep deaths, births and marriages records of almost every family, let alone the royal families in europe. it is funny to think and try to compare the british and european references and records with our references, if any. however, it looks like we are and will continue to be plagued with backwardness all our lives. we are unable to put our minds together to solve the complexities of the modern era. whenever we face a dilemma, we dig for old books of our forefathers even if they are of no value from the scientifi c point of view. ali juma, the former egyptian mufti, in an interview with the egyptian satellite cbc mubasher said the grandfather of the british monarch queen elizabeth ii was hashemite and said books and available documents prove this fact. he also said europe — which did not tolerate the muslims since there was not a single muslim in europe during that time — arrested a hashemite and forced to him abandon his religion. that man was none other than the grandfather of queen elizabeth, who was forced to abandon islam, said the mufti. in another statement the mufti said earlier ‘the souls of the dead have the gift of god in the form of power to return to the burial place between thursday late afternoon and dawn of saturday’ and that the souls know the burial place of the body through something what he called the satellite or google earth. this is exactly what i mean by saying that when we are helpless and ashamed of our present, or failure to invent something, or understand a theory, we usually resort to the past, that is our islamic google to provide us the answer. it is not strange that such statements are made by a cleric, but what is strange is the people who fell for this type of absurdity, believed the story of the mufti and started promoting it. this happens perhaps because we have nothing in our heads that is praiseworthy. the affi liation of the queen to the hashemite does not mean much. the facts will not change just because of our few worn out references or our ignorance. the mufti does not know that to link affi liation to the hashemite is not that diffi cult. a friend told me he received an offi cial document from the ambassador of a prestigious arab country to prove his family is a descendant of the hashemite. i leave it for the reader to guess what he will say next.
